January 22
King promulgates the Armed Police Ordinance intended to activate the armed police force (APF) and make arrangements for its deployment against the Maoist insurgents.
February 3
Maoist insurgents ambush the convoy of the country's Chief Justice, Keshav Prasad Upadhyay, who narrowly escapes the attack, in Chhyasatti, Surkhet, 500km west of the capital Kathmandu. Six others, including a judicial officer, are killed in the attack.
February 12
The eve of the fifth anniversary of the commencement of "People's War" brings about escalation in insurgent activities.
February 13
Maoists set all documents on fire at the Bahrabise bazaar police station. They also set the Samdu police post, near Mayanglung, on fire. In another attack on security forces, the Maoists injure a policeman at the Madhumalla police station and chop the limbs of a school teacher in Shantipur, near Gulmi.
March
Government and Maoist insurgents unofficially consider peace talks.
March 6
The Prime Minister Girija Prasad Koirala makes a fresh initiative to end the six-year old insurgency and offers to hold talks with the rebels. Human Rights activist Tuladhar and others also involve themselves in working out the mechanism to bring the Maoist insurgents and the government to the negotiating table.
April 1
One of the largest attacks on the police force since the start of the insurrection reported. Some 300 rebels attack a hilltop police post in Rukum district and kill 31 policemen, besides injuring 11 and abducting 23 more.
April 16
In a nation-wide address, the PM, G.P.Koirala appeals to the Maoists to end violence and surrender weapons, while assuring them of a general amnesty.
May 27
CPN-UML calls for a three-day nation-wide general strike, which turns violent. All 10 leftist parties in the country extend support to the strike.
June 1
King Birendra, Queen Aishwarya and other close relatives are killed in the Narayanhiti Royal palace massacre.
June 4
Prince Gyanendra, brother of Birendra is crowned King after late King Birendra's son, Dipendra––who had been declared King on June 2––succumbs to injuries sustained during the palace shooting.
July 6
Nine Maoist insurgents, including five women cadres, are killed in attacks on three police outposts in Lamjung, Gulmi and Nuwakot.
July 7
Maoist insurgents set off explosions near the residence of Prime Minister Girija Prasad Koirala at Biratnagar. However, no one is killed or injured in the incident
July 13
Deputy Prime Minister and Home Minister Ram Chandra Paudel resigns from the Cabinet and says democracy in Nepal is in crisis.
July 19
Prime Minister quits amidst rising Maoist uprising.
July 22
Sher Bahadur Deuba elected as new Prime Minister.

Deuba government sworn-in.
July 23
Maoist insurgents declare cease-fire.
August 30
At the first round of talks between the Maoist insurgents and the government, the insurgents demand abolition of constitutional monarchy, rewriting of the Constitution, and establishing an interim government to facilitate transition to a republic.
September 13-14
Second round of talks between the government and the insurgents end inconclusively as the Maoists insist on the formation of a Republic and setting up of a Constituent Assembly to review the Constitution.
November 11
Defence Ministry announces that the US government has made a commitment to supply Nepal with 10 modern, fully armed military helicopters to "fight terrorism".
November 13
Third round of talks between the government and Maoist insurgents end in a dead lock. Government insists on making changes to the Constitution now in force to accommodate Maoist demands, but not abrogate it. The Maoists stick to their demand that a Constituent Assembly be convened to further ensure people’s rights. Significantly, the Maoists drop their demand for a Republic.
November 22
A statement released by the insurgents indicates that Krishna Bahadur Mahara had been appointed Joint Convenor and Dev Gurung as Secretary of the outfit.
November 23
Maoist insurgents trash the ongoing truce and during night attack the Army barracks in Ghorai, Dang district, killing 14 soldiers and injuring 30 more.
Insurgents announce the formation of a central People’s Revolutionary Government with Babu Ram Bhattarai as Chief Convenor of the Maoist parallel government.
Insurgents attack the airport in Surkhet and blow up a private-owned helicopter, besides damaging two more helicopters stationed at the airport.
November 26
Government declares ‘state of Emergency’.
November 30
Terrorism Ordinance 2001passed.
